The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games Honor the Kermode Bear

Feb. 23, 2010

The Great Bear Rainforest is the Only Habitat of This Rare Bear

PRINCESS ROYAL ISLAND, GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST, BC, CANADA – In the ancient Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia, the Kermode sea bear has long been renowned as an omen of peace and harmony; a rare flash of pure white in a vast blanket of lush green terrain. To the Gitga’at First Nations community who live along British Columbia’s Northwest coast, the Kermode – or Spirit Bear – serves as a reminder from the creator of the universe of the harsh conditions of the previous ice age. Now the bear also serves as a centerpiece of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, held near its last known habitat: The 25,000-square-mile Great Bear Rainforest.

The Kermode bear is one of the rarest animals in the world. Some estimates say there are as few as 100 Kermode bears alive today, distinguished as a white-coated sub-species of the black bear that lives in the region. Due to a rare recessive gene, only 10 percent of these black bears are Kermode bears, found most commonly on Princess Royal and Gribbel islands.

The Great Bear Rainforest represents one-quarter of what remains globally of the world’s coastal temperate rain forests. King Pacific Lodge, located in the heart of the rainforest and accessible only by boat or floatplane, provides the only base camp for explorers seeking an extraordinary travel quest. Led by a skilled guide, guests search for bears either by approaching by boat along lush river valleys and broad estuaries or on foot through forests of western hemlock and red cedar. Viewing platforms are also strategically placed to allow guests to observe the bears from a hidden observation point. September is the best time of year for Kermode bear viewing as the bears are on their quest to fill up on salmon and berries before winter hibernation.
